Cremation has soared in popularity over the past couple of generations, especially here in the United States. Cremations now account for over half of all final arrangements, with no end in sight to the trend.
What is behind the growing popularity of families choosing cremation? There are several factors.
Cost-Effective
Cremations are generally a more cost-effective form of final service, especially when compared to a traditional casket burial. Cost-conscious families are choosing cremations, and even when cost may not be a factor, some view traditional burials as wasteful. Families are discovering that they can still have visiting hours and a memorial service with a cremation.
Environmental Factors
Cremations use fewer natural resources than traditional burials, and no chemical embalming fluids are buried in the process.
Cremations use less or no ground space, and no wood or metal is used, unlike for caskets. There is also no concrete used, such as for vaults. “Green” cremations even go as far as to use biodegradable urns.
Flexibility
Cremations and associated services are extremely flexible. They allow for more time for planning and gathering friends and relatives. Services can even be delayed to seasonally better weather. This is particularly attractive for families that extend across the country or even the world.
More Widely Accepted
There was a time when some religions, even major ones, looked down on or even discouraged cremations. That is rarely the case today.
At the Cremation Society of Greater Cincinnati, we can conduct appropriate cremations and final services based on the practices and beliefs of many of the world’s religions.
Ample Customization
For those preplanning, cremation provides a powerful choice of options. Choices can be made to have cremains placed in an urn or scattered over a favored location. Costs can be lowered. Cremains can be used in creating everything from tattoo ink and fireworks to jewelry or reefs. Many find these operations liberating when compared to a casket burial.
