Myrna Moxley Smith, age 83, passed away on November 16, 2022, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Myrna was born on October 17, 1939, to the late Ralph W. Moxley and Berniece Throne Moxley in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
Myrna graduated from Birmingham Seaholm High School and the University of Michigan where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi. U of M was a lifelong passion, and she was a devoted Wolverine fan. She will be remembered for her strength, passion and determined attitude. She loved to entertain and meet people; she was outspoken and fierce but also loved to take people under her wing and help them. She was a longtime resident of both the City of Grosse Pointe and Grosse Pointe Farms, MI.
Myrna was a teacher until her children were born and then became active in the Junior League of Detroit and Grosse Pointe Memorial Church, FLEC and many other activities. After her children were older, Myrna was a Realtor in Grosse Pointe and was active in the Grosse Pointe Board of Realtors and the Womens Board of Realtors. She also became involved in The Daughters of the American Revolution and The Grosse Pointe Historical Society. Myrna was a City Councilmember for the City of Grosse Pointe in the 80’s and 90’s and ran for mayor in 1993. She moved to Cincinnati in 2012 and became active in the Junior League of Cincinnati and Knox Presbyterian Church.
Myrna is survived by daughters Laurie Kelley (Jeff) of Grand Haven, MI and Mary Anne Newman (Doug) of Mariemont, OH, her beloved grandchildren: Kate, Lainey and Ella Newman and Jonathan and Matthew Kelley. She is also survived by her brothers, Richard Moxley (late Judith) and Ralph Moxley (Kathi) and many cousins and extended family members.
A memorial service for Myrna Smith will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2023, at 11 a.m. at Grosse Pointe Memorial Church, 16 Lake Shore Dr, Grosse Pointe Farms, MI 48236. There will be a private inurnment in the columbarium inside Barbour Chapel at the church.
