For many, the loss of a loved one leaves one asking “what’s next?” The final services have been concluded, goodbyes have been said, and yet there seems to be something else that needs to be done. A solution may be to find a way to honor the life of that loved one.
Here are five meaningful ways you can honor a loved one upon their passing.
Make a Donation
Making a donation to a favored cause of the deceased is a common and straightforward way to honor the life of a deceased person and is often encouraged through an obituary. Such a donation can help fight a disease that may have contributed to the death of the loved one or may just have been a favored charity.
Take Part in a Favorite Experience
If you would like to honor a loved one, decide to fully experience one of their favorite activities or hobbies for a few hours or a day or two. Did they love camping? Plan a camping trip in their honor. Did they enjoy golf? Gather some friends and play 18 holes in their honor. This can be a fun and enjoyable way to honor a deceased loved one.
Complete Something Left Unfinished
What better way to honor the life of a loved one than to finish a project they may have started? Maybe it is finishing knitting an uncompleted blanket, refinishing a piece of antique furniture, or getting that classic car up and running. These are projects worth asking about and pursuing to honor the life of a loved one.
Establish an Annual Observation
It could be an annual breakfast, lunch, dinner, or picnic. It could be an excursion to see their favorite baseball team or a football tailgate party. Any organized annual event can serve as a terrific memorial for a loved one, especially when based around one of their favorite activities. It doesn’t have to be expensive or somber. You are still paying your respects with celebration.
Establish a Grant or Scholarship in Their Name
If resources permit, establishing a grant or scholarship is a significant way to honor a loved one. Many communities have foundations that can help establish and manage such grants and scholarships.
If your goal is keeping the name of a loved one pertinent and memorable, there are several options to accomplish this. Choose the one that is best for you and where the resources are available.
